Technology has been around for the blink of an eye and to think what we could do with it in another 100 years makes my brain hurt. A technology of the future that I believe could be right around the corner is Quantum computers and more specifically, quantum computing capabilities. Once we have achieved these things, the second golden age may begin.
Quantum computing can bring us things not possible on standard digital computers we know and love. One capability is Parallelism; Quantum computers can perform parallel computations on many possible states simultaneously, leading to the potential for solving certain problems much faster than classical computers. Another game-changing ability is Superposition; Qubits can exist in a superposition of states, allowing quantum computers to explore multiple solutions to a problem at the same time. This is particularly advantageous for certain types of optimization and search problems. Finally, they can also bring the concept of Entanglement; Quantum entanglement enables qubits to be correlated in such a way that the state of one qubit is directly related to the state of another, regardless of the distance between them. This property can be harnessed for efficient communication and information processing. Quantum computers will also bring a degree of danger in cyber security as they will be able to factor large numbers exponentially faster than classical computers. This could have significant implications for breaking current encryption methods, prompting the development of quantum-resistant encryption algorithms. However quantum computers pose a threat to classical encryption methods, they also offer the potential for secure quantum communication using quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols.
These are all abilities that will change the way our civilization operates and there are many more capabilities that these systems and computers possess. This technology however is forecasted for the 2035 range which may seen far away however this number is subject to change for better or for worse. With that being said in the grand scheme of things 12 years is “just around the corner” for buy-and-hold investors and with that being said a few companies that have come across my radar when trying to take advantage of the next tech boom are RGTI, IONQ, and QBTS. All of them remain extremely speculative, and to approach with caution if at all. For now.
